by Marcelo Moreira

Flag carrier Air Algérie is to acquire 16 new ATR 72-600s, plus a training simulator in the largest deal the turboprop manufacturer has ever signed for the African continent.

The aircraft will be operated by the carrier’s recently-founded Domestic Airlines subsidiary. This new airline was set up by the nation’s government at the start of the year to provide essential connectivity around the region, allowing Air Algérie financial room to develop its international services and modernise its fleet.

Hamza Benhamouda, Chief Executive Officer of Air Algérie said: “The ATR 72-600 is the right aircraft to help us connect all regions of our country and support national development through reliable and efficient air transport. Its performance on short and thin routes makes it an essential part of our strategy while its fuel efficiency also supports our goal of reducing emissions and building more sustainable operations. By investing in this new fleet and the first ATR 72-600 simulator in Africa, we are also reinforcing our commitment to regional connectivity, operational excellence, and the future of regional aviation in Algeria.”

Deliveries of the new aircraft will take place between 2026-2028. Air Algérie also currently operates 15 examples of older ATR 72-212A aircraft.
