An Air India flight bound for Chennai made a precautionary return to Mumbai after reporting a burning odour in the cockpit on 27 June 2025.
Air India flight AI639, operated by an Airbus A321-200, had conducted a departure from runway 27 Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM).

The flight was a scheduled service bound for Chennai International Airport (MAA). Shortly after departure, flight crew reported a burning odour in the cockpit.
As a result, the climb was terminated and a precautionary return to the departure airport was carried out.
The flight subsequently landed on runway 27 Mumbai (BOM), approximately 45 minutes after its initial departure.

Due to the unserviceability, the airline mustered a replacement aircraft to carry out the scheduled AI639 service to Chennai.

Flight data shows that flight AI639 had climbed to flight level FL240 before flight crew subsequently terminated the climb procedure.
A direct return to the origin airport was then carried out.

The aircraft conducting the AI639 service to Chennai International Airport was an Airbus A321-200, registered VT-PPW. This is a 15.5 year old narrow body aircraft belonging to the national carrier air India.
It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in January 2010.
