China Airlines announces the acquisition of up to 13 Airbus aircraft, including A350-900 and A321neo, in a plan of $ 2 billion to modernize fleet by 2026

China Airlines, based in Taiwan, announced plans to acquire up to thirteen new aircraft, five Airbus A350-900 and eight A321neo, in an estimated transaction of about $ 2 billion ($ 11.1 billion).

The proposal was approved by the company’s board of directors and communicated in a document sent to the Taipei Stock Exchange last Wednesday (25). Of the expected total, at least five A321neo must be provided by leasing with Aircraft Lease Corporation (ALC). Although there is no definitive confirmation of the business yet, the initiative represents a new strategic movement of the company to reinforce and modernize its fleet.

The announced plan adds to orders made in December 2024, when China Airlines signed agreements with Airbus and Boeing for the acquisition of ten A350-1000 and Dec Boeing 777-9, respectively. In parallel, the company also ordered four Boeing 777-8F freighters, a contract confirmed in May this year.

In addition to the new acquisitions, the company said it will keep part of its current fleet in operation longer, as a way to mitigate delays in the delivery of Boeing 787 ordered at the 2023 Paris Air Show. This order includes eighteen 787-9 and six 787-10 units.

The expansion of the China Airlines fleet occurs amid a broader movement of modernization among Taiwan’s major airlines. In March, Eva Air, the main domestic competitor, signed a request for six A350-1000 and three A321neo. Starlux Airlines announced, during this year’s Paris Air Show, the acquisition of ten A350-1000 to strengthen its international network from Taipei Airport (TPE).
