Halifax Stanfield International Airport has launched an exciting new chapter in transatlantic travel with Edelweiss Air’s non-stop service to Zurich, Switzerland.
This marks a significant milestone for the airport, introducing both a new international airline partner and Zurich as a fresh destination on its route map.
The service opens doors for travellers and strengthens ties between Atlantic Canada and Europe.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Edelweiss Air and launch this non-stop service to Zurich,” said Joyce Carter, President and CEO of Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA).
“This connection creates exciting opportunities for Atlantic Canadians to explore Europe and invites European travellers to discover the beauty of Nova Scotia. We’re proud to partner with Edelweiss and eager to see the benefits this route brings to our communities.”
A New Route for Atlantic Canada
Halifax joins Calgary and Vancouver as one of only three Canadian cities served by Edelweiss Air. The twice-weekly flights operate on an Airbus A340-300, accommodating 314 passengers across business, economy max, and economy classes.
The flight duration is approximately seven hours, offering a convenient and comfortable journey across the Atlantic.
Patrick Heymann, Chief Commercial Officer of Edelweisshighlighted the route’s significance. “This new service complements our existing flights to western Canada,” he said.
“It brings Switzerland and Europe closer to Atlantic Canada’s stunning landscapes. At the same time, it offers Canadians an easier way to explore Switzerland or connect to destinations across Europe and beyond through our Zurich hub.”

Edelweiss Air: A Swiss Tradition of Excellence
Edelweiss Air, a Swiss leisure airline and sister company to Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS), is a valued addition to Halifax Stanfield’s roster of partners.
Based in Zurich, Edelweiss connects Switzerland to top vacation spots worldwide. The airline, part of the Lufthansa Group, is renowned for its commitment to quality and comfort. It inspired by its namesake—the iconic Edelweiss flower of the Swiss Alps.
Through its affiliation with SWISS and the Lufthansa Group, Edelweiss offers passengers access to a vast global network. Seamless connections are available via code-sharing agreements with Star Alliance partners, including Air Canada.
Travelers can easily transfer to carriers like Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Eurowings, or Brussels Airlines.

Boosting Tourism and Economic Growth
The new route is set to drive tourism and economic opportunities for Nova Scotia. “This service is a vital step in growing our tourism sector and opening new markets,” said John A. MacDonald, ministerial assistanton behalf of Colton LeBlanc, Nova Scotia’s Minister of Growth and Development.
“We’re excited to welcome more visitors to our province and build stronger connections with Switzerland. This route also creates new opportunities for Nova Scotia businesses.”
Conclusion
For Atlantic Canadians, the Halifax-Zurich route offers a direct path to Switzerland’s cultural and scenic wonders, from the vibrant city of Zurich to the breathtaking Alps. It also serves as a convenient hub for exploring Europe, Africa, and Asia.
European travellers, meanwhile, gain easier access to Nova Scotia’s rugged coastline, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality.
This new service not only enhances travel options but also fosters cultural and economic ties between two distant regions. As Edelweiss Air takes flight from Halifax, it signals a bright future for transatlantic connections and shared adventures.
