FedEx is set to become the launch customer for the world’s first ATR 72-600 passenger aircraft converted to a freighter configuration, following a definitive agreement signed with regional aircraft lessor ACIA Aero Leasing.
The aircraft is scheduled for delivery in December 2025 and will feature the Large Cargo Door (LCD) modification – developed in partnership with ACIA’s sister company IPRC.
The deal marks a significant milestone for the ATR freighter market, with ACIA Aero Leasing’s conversion programme representing the first speculative investment in converting the -600 series passenger variant.
“As market leaders in the ATR pax to freighter conversion, we wished to reaffirm our position in this segment by delivering the world’s first converted 72-600 LCD,” said Mark Dunnachie, senior vice president of commercial at ACIA Aero Leasing. “In partnership with our sister company IPRC, we are delighted to work with FedEx, the world’s largest operator of ATR freighters, as the launch customer.”
Dunnachie added that the aircraft will incorporate specific enhancements tailored to FedEx’s operational needs: “These technical enhancements will continue to set the standard for the best regional freighter solution in today’s market.”
The aircraft will also feature a rear flip door, enabled by IPRC’s recent acquisition of the M7 Aerospace design rights. This feature is intended to maximise loading flexibility and overall cargo efficiency for operators.
ACIA Aero Leasing launched its ATR 72-600 LCD conversion programme in 2024 and has since positioned itself to offer a next-generation regional freighter to meet growing demand in the feeder and e-commerce cargo sectors.
