IAG rolls out AI system to streamline engine maintenance

by virtualnews.2x

International Airlines Group (IAG) has launched a new artificial intelligence (AI)-driven Engine Optimisation System designed to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of its fleet maintenance.

Developed in-house at the company’s AI Lab, the system is aimed at helping engineering and maintenance teams across IAG’s airlines make smarter decisions about when and how to service aircraft engines.

The initiative is part of the group’s wider digital transformation strategy, which places innovation at its core.

Maintenance of course plays a critical role in ensuring the reliability, performance and cost-effectiveness of aircraft engines. But scheduling maintenance requires balancing multiple complex factors – from parts availability and regulatory compliance to minimising disruption to operations.

IAG claims that its new AI technology tackles this challenge by running millions of possible maintenance scenarios and recommending the most efficient path forward.

It streamlines planning by aligning maintenance windows with the availability of spare parts and other logistical requirements, reducing the risk of delays caused by missing components.

The system is already operational at Aer Lingus for managing CFM56 engine maintenance and is expected to roll out across all IAG carriers by the end of 2025.

“Our new Engine Optimisation System shows how IAG is using AI to tackle real-world challenges and improve maintenance across the group,” said Ben Dias, IAG’s chief AI scientist. “Transformation is at the heart of our overall business strategy and is powered by innovation including AI.

“By applying advanced algorithms, we’re making our engine maintenance programme more efficient. We are avoiding unnecessary maintenance delays to ensure that our fleet is available and in service.”

Dias added: “The system gives our people the data and tools they need for smarter planning and better teamwork.”

IAG’s AI capabilities are anchored in its Innovation Labs located in Barcelona and London. These centres bring together leading experts and emerging technologies to drive forward improvements in aircraft maintenance, customer service, and operational performance.

IAG Is the Parent Company of British Airways, Iberia, Vueling, AER LINGUS, Level, IAAG LOYALTY AND IAG CARGO.
