Most produced plane in history turns 70

Cessna 172 Skyhawk, the most produced plane in aviation history, completes 70 years of operation this June. Since its inaugural flight, more than 45,000 units have been delivered worldwide, consolidating the model as a global reference in aviation schools and the formation of new pilots.

Recognized by high wing design and stable performance, Skyhawk has become one of the most commonly used models by private pilots and instruction centers.

“Like the most popular aircraft in aviation history, Skyhawk’s 70th anniversary reflects their exceptional design and consistent performance,” said Chris Crow, vice president of aircraft sales of Textron Aviation’s piston, manufacturer of the Cessna line.

Despite losing space among owner-pilots for more modern models, such as Cirrus’s SR family, Skyhawk continues as leader among aviation schools worldwide. The aircraft is also recognized for its operational simplicity and ease of piloting.

Since 2015, Textron has maintained the Top Hawk program, which provides new Skyhawk units to universities and instructional centers, with the aim of supporting pilot training. About 50 aircraft have already been delivered through the initiative, including institutions in the United States and, more recently, in the United Kingdom.

To maintain its relevance in the market, Cessna 172 Skyhawk has undergone several updates over seven decades. The latest involves the models produced from 2023, which incorporate improvements such as headphones for headphones, black -finished instrument panel and redesigned seats for greater comfort and durability.
