Iata launches Saf Matchmaker platform to connect airlines to sustainable fuel suppliers

The International Air Transport Association, IATA, announced yesterday (26), the launch of the SAF Matchmaker platform, with the objective of facilitating the process of sustainable aviation fuel acquisition by airlines.

The tool connects operators ‘demand to producers’ offering, allowing the parties to start direct negotiations outside the platform. Based on three pillars – efficiency, connectivity and visibility – SAF Matchmaker is created to boost the development of the SAF voluntary market, centralizing information and expanding transparency on available products.

Through the platform, suppliers can announce available or future SAF volumes, with information such as type of raw materials, technology used, place of production, reducing emissions and compliance with international regulatory standards such as Corsia (from OACI) and the European Union Renewable Energy Directive (I RED).

Airlines, in turn, register their purchase interest and, if compatible, are connected to suppliers to treat conditions such as price and payment method.

According to Marie Owens Thomsen, senior vice president of sustainability and chief economist at Iata, the initiative seeks to reduce operational and economic barriers in the adoption of SAF. “To reach zero liquid carbon emission by 2050, we need an affordable, transparent, fluid and efficient SAF market“, These.

The SAF Matchmaker, hosted at Aviation Energy Hub – digital platform that brings together energy management tools for the air industry – is initially available to airlines and SAF suppliers. In future steps, buyers not directly linked to aviation can also use the solution.
