The first commercial plane manufactured entirely with Russian components made its inaugural flight on Thursday (26) from Zhukovsky airport near Moscow.

The MC-21-310 model unit remained on flight for four hours before returning to the same airport. The model marks a new phase of the MC-21 program, which had its first version-still with foreign pieces-tested in 2017. After the start of the Ukraine war in 2022, the state conglomeration Rostec decided to replace all imported components of the project, including Pratt & Whitney engines, which were exchanged by Turbofan from Alto Bypass PD-14, developed in Russia.

Certification of the nationalized version of the MC-21-310 has been postponed several times and is now scheduled for the summer of 2026. Aeroflot, Russia’s main state airline, expects to receive up to 108 units between the end of 2026 and 2030. In total, the company has 19 aircraft from the commissioned model, according to the CH-Aviation platform data. The other ninety units should be delivered after 2030.

Import replacement is also underway on another Russian aeronautical program, the Superjet SJ-100. The first unit of the fully nationalized version flew for the first time in August 2023.
