Qantas Airways is addressing a recent cyber incident that compromised customer data, implementing robust measures to secure its systems and support affected individuals. The airline has released an update outlining its response and ongoing investigation.

Initial findings indicate no further suspicious activity has been detected, and the system is now secure.

The compromised platform did not store credit card details, financial information, or passport data, ensuring these remain unaffected. Qantas Frequent Flyer accounts were also not impacted.

No individuals or groups have contacted Qantas claiming possession of the data. The airline is working with government authorities to investigate the breach further.

To enhance security, Qantas has introduced stricter access controls, improved system monitoring, and additional safeguards for Frequent Flyer accounts, including mandatory extra identification for account modifications.

Customer Notifications and Support


Starting next week, Qantas will inform affected customers about the specific personal data potentially accessed, which varies by individual. The airline has bolstered its contact centre resources to handle inquiries, receiving over 5,000 calls through a dedicated support line established for the incident.

Since Wednesday, Qantas has emailed Frequent Flyer members to notify them of the breach and issue apologies.

Customers who have not received this communication are advised to check their spam or junk folders. Separately, the airline contacted approximately 6 million customers whose personal information was stored on the affected platform.

Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson stated: “Data breaches can cause significant concern, and we are focused on providing transparency to our customers. Our cybersecurity teams, alongside external experts, are determining the scope of accessed information.”

“We are finalizing a process to share specific details with affected customers and have implemented additional security measures. We apologize for the uncertainty and are committed to regular updates.”

Customer Guidance and Scam Alerts


Qantas has established a dedicated support line (1800 971 541 or +61 2 8028 0534) offering identity protection advice and resources.

The airline warns of scammers impersonating Qantas and clarifies that it will never request passwords, booking references, or sensitive login details.

Customers receiving suspicious communications should report them via the support line, Scamwatch, or local authorities.

Frequent Flyer Program Unaffected


Qantas confirmed that Frequent Flyer accounts remain secure, with no compromised passwords, PINs, or login details.

The accessed data cannot be used to breach these accounts, which are protected by default multi-factor authentication, including one-time passwords, security questions, or the Authenticator App. Members can continue using the program and engaging with partners as normal and may update account details for added security.
