A United Airlines flight operating a service from Newark to New Delhi has declared an emergency and is currently returning to Newark Liberty International Airport.
United Airlines flight UA82, a Boeing 787-9 bound for Delhi, declared the emergency not long after departure. The flight has carried out a turnaround and is expediting a return to Newark.
The nature of the emergency prompting the return is not yet known.
Flight UA82 declared the emergency from cruising flight at flight level FL330. The aircraft was preparing for the transatlantic overwater leg of the service to Delhi, India.
Flight crew squawked emergency transponder 7700 at 02:15 UTC, before carrying out a turnaround and direct track for the departure airport.

Flight UA82 is continuing a return to the departure airport and is presently on descent, passing through FL180. The flight was originally bound for Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL).

The aircraft conducting the DL82 service to Delhi is a Boeing 787-9, registered N23983. This is a 4.8 year old widebody aircraft belonging to the carrier United Airlines. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in September 2020.
