Vietnam Airlines unveils cargo airline plans as freight surges

by virtualnews.2x

Vietnam Airlines has announced plans to launch a standalone cargo airline in 2026, following a surge in international freight demand.

The airline’s chief executive Le Hong Ha revealed the move at the airline’s annual shareholder meeting on 25 June 2025.

In Q2 2025, cargo made up 65% of the carrier’s revenue, helping it post a quarterly profit before tax of VNĐ1 trillion and forecast over VNĐ4 trillion for H1 2025.

To support the cargo shift, the airline says it will convert several A321s for freight use by late 2025 and invest in logistics hubs at Long Thành and Gia Bình airports.

However, Ha acknowledged some inherent risks in the air cargo market, warning of cost pressures from high fuel prices and geopolitical tensions. In response, Vietnam Airlines says it is leasing more aircraft and engines, diversifying its customer base, and expanding digital and international partnerships.
